GTA 5's character switcher is one of those things most players use without thinking after a few hours in Los Santos. Hold Down on the D-pad, nudge the right stick, and you're back with Michael, Franklin, or Trevor in a second. But if you've ever looked at the bottom slot on that wheel and wondered what's meant to go there, you're not alone. That fourth space isn't some hidden story hero or a secret cousin of Trevor's. It's tied to your GTA Online profile, and players who manage multiple saves or browse GTA V Accounts will usually spot the difference right away once an Online character has been created.

What the fourth slot actually does
The fourth option on the character wheel is reserved for your GTA Online character. In the single-player wheel, Franklin sits at the top, Michael is on the left, Trevor is on the right, and the Online character takes the bottom position. At first, that lower slot appears as a blank silhouette. It stays that way until you've gone into GTA Online and made a character of your own. Once that's done, the silhouette is replaced by your custom character, and selecting it moves you out of story mode and into the online side of the game.

How to make it appear on the wheel
There's no special mission to beat and no strange cheat code needed for this one. You just need to create a GTA Online character. Start GTA Online from the menu, go through the character creation process, and let the game save your new profile. After that, return to story mode and open the character wheel again. The bottom slot should now show your Online character instead of the empty outline. If it doesn't show straight away, don't panic. Sometimes the game needs a moment, or you may need to reload after the Online data has synced properly.

Can you unlock another story character
A lot of players hear "fourth character" and expect a hidden member of the main cast. That's not how GTA 5 works. The campaign is built around Michael, Franklin, and Trevor, and Rockstar never added a fourth playable protagonist for the story. You can't unlock Lamar, Lester, or any other named character as a permanent story-mode option. The fourth wheel slot is basically a shortcut to GTA Online, not a secret chapter of the campaign. It's still handy, though, especially if you jump between solo missions and online sessions often.

Using Director Mode for other characters
If you just want to mess around as someone else, Director Mode is the better route. You can open it through the in-game phone by dialing 1-999-5782-5368, then pick from many characters and NPCs you've unlocked through story progress. It's not the same as adding them to the main campaign, but it's great for free roaming, making clips, or just causing chaos without worrying about missions.
